Brief Description of Organization:

The new Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES was founded January 1, 2009. It has arisen from the Fraunhofer CWMT in Bremerhaven, a joint center from Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen and Fraunhofer LBF in Darmstadt and will be expanded by merging with the Institute for Solar Energy Supply Technology ISET in Kassel. Thus, it offers research and development along the value chain of wind turbines from material development to grid integration. Fraunhofer IWES project groups in Hanover and Oldenburg will complete the spread of offers of the institute. Furthermore, the Fraunhofer IWES is going to work in close collaboration with the “northern universities” in Hanover, Bremen and Oldenburg as well as the university in Kassel.
The institute is the contact for all questions around wind energy as well as energy system technology especially in the area of renewable energies. The different locations of the Fraunhofer IWES complement perfectly. The location Kassel is devoted to electric power and control engineering including grid integration, the location Bremerhaven is devoted to development, load test and the integrated simulation of structures and their components as well as the special conditions in the offshore area. The project group Hanover acts for construction engineering and Oldenburg acts for the numerical wind simulation.

Main Tasks attributed under Work Packages:
  • Project coordinator
  • Task leader of 3.4 Design tools & standards and 5.1 Technology and R&D gaps & needs
  • Contributions to WP 2 resources: wind, sea states etc.
