Brief Description of Organization:

Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables S.A., ITER, was founded in 1990 with the aim to cover the need of starting a new research field in the islands in order to reduce the dependence from the exterior energy supply and to allow a cleaner and sustainable development. Its objectives are to promote research activities and technological development related with the use of the renewable energies, the study of subterranean hydro resources, seismic-volcanic prediction and surveillance, environmental control, and development of communication and information technologies. At the present time, the institute has a multidisciplinary team of more than 200 professionals, comprising of three R&D areas such as Renewable Energies, Engineering and Environmental Sciences, which are complemented by a Diffusion Department, devoted to the dissemination of renewable energies and trough several activities such us conferences, seminars and workshops. One of ITER’s main activities is the electricity generation from Renewable energies. To this end, ITER has been the EPC and maintenance contractor for the installation of 37.6 MW photovoltaic plants, as well as 13 MW in wind farms, some of whose core components have also been designed and developed by ITER, such as the inverters, the mounting structures and the monitoring system.
As a result, ITER has started its own PV fabrication plant, in order to reduce module costs by optimizing the manufacturing process.

Main Tasks attributed under Work Packages:

With a specific regional situation with respect to the wind and wave recourses deep in the Atlantic ocean and the specific situation of the isolation of the Canary islands ITER will provide input for the WP 2, 3, 4 and 5.
